Tea Cabin

The Tea Cabin is a much loved historic building in a prime location in the middle of Weymouth esplanade. Originally built as a shelter for the drivers of Hansom Cabs, the Cabin currently serves tea, coffee and light meals to take away.

The Olympic sailing events in 2012 will be held in Weymouth bay, and in response to this the Esplanade is being refurbished and improved. John Stark and Crickmay were appointed initially to design a dining area and present this in the form of a ‘concept model’ for the purpose of public consultation. The concept uses high quality local materials to create a simple form sympathetic to, but distinct from, the original building. Focusing on the view of the sea, and offering internal and external seating, the proposal offers customers shelter from the strong prevailing winds via discrete glass screens.
