William Barnes Primary School
We were appointed to design the refurbishment of the WC and Cloakroom area of the school. The existing arrangement (in what was originally the school hall), had a wide corridor, with niches from it containing coat rails. The corridor was used for storage of materials and display of pupils work. The toilets were cramped and in poor condition. In recognition that a corridor of this width would inevitably be used for storage, a new fire exit was introduced into one of the Classrooms, so that each of the classrooms has a fire exit direct to outside and the corridor is no longer the primary route in the event of fire. This enabled the space to be reconfigured so that coat and bags are stored along one wall of the corridor, and the niches became toilets. The whole area was also refurbished and redecorated, within a tight budget. The result is a brighter and more useable space with more generous toilets and modern fittings.
