Montevideo House

A new wing is proposed for residents with dementia, accommodating 24 bedrooms plus ancillary rooms and circulation. A central courtyard is integral to the design, providing a safe and secure environment, and enabling the residents to enjoy the open air whenever they please. The corridor around the courtyard provides a bright and airy circular route, with a pleasant aspect. Glazing to the corridor facilitates staff to supervision of the courtyard from within the building, and enables the residents to orientate themselves. The courtyard layout enables effective use of natural ventilation and daylight, to minimise energy use whilst maintaining a comfortable interior.

The design makes reference to the existing listed Georgian building, whilst maintaining a contemporary character. The proportions of the fenestration of the bedroom bays match that of the existing building, and have also been used as a 'module' to order the other parts of the building.
