We were appointed for the 'full service' from initial advice regarding the site, through concept design proposals, obtaining the required consents and administration of the construction contract.
The site frontage, (13 South Street, Dorchester) was previously occupied by a 'gentlemen's outfitters' which was in poor condition. Behind this was an art restorer's studio. We arranged the purchase of the land at the rear to give a larger overall site. Following this purchase, the existing buildings were demolished to enable the new construction.
Designed for a pension fund, the building had to be flexible to appeal to many potential retailers. The first occupiers were Jewellers Guild, and it is currently occupied by Next. The main facade features a large glazed shop front, with an oriel window at the corner as a focal feature to attract the eye.
The project won the West Dorset District Council Civic Design Award in 1988, see Awards
